ESP8285 can't use ap_if.config "can't set AP config"

i did the following

import network
ap_if = network.WLAN(network.AP_IF)
ap_if.active(False)
ap_if.config(essid="someID", password="somePassword")

but i always get "can't set AP config", no matter what parameter i try to use

listdir is also doing funky stuff on this module, getting a crap ton of " '\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00.\x00\x00\x00'," as answer + the folders and file that icreated for a test

AP mode should be explicitly enabled. Had a crash because of this after flashing the firmware.

Both items involve the same root behavior: calling network.WLAN.config() on an inactive AP interface on ESP8266/ESP8285. PR #2808 fixes inisetup.py (the firmware initialization script) to call ap_if.active(True) before ap_if.config(), preventing a crash at boot. Issue #3813 reports the same constraint from user code — the reporter explicitly calls ap_if.active(False) then ap_if.config(), hitting the "can't set AP config" error. The PR is a targeted workaround in the init script and does not change the underlying API behavior (no improvement to error handling, no ability to configure an inactive interface). It demonstrates the correct usage pattern but does not resolve the user-facing problem described in the issue.

Suggested action

Leave issue #3813 open. Reference PR #2808 as context showing the AP must be active before calling config(). The issue warrants either: (1) improved error messaging in the `config()` implementation, or (2) documentation clarifying that the interface must be active prior to configuration. The listdir corruption mentioned in the issue is unrelated and may warrant a separate report.
